10 things Apple definitely doesn’t want you to know.

To start off, we all know that apple is quite the success story.  They have new products that are sleek, in high demand, and create great marketing schemes for their items.  However, with every great company, there are always some issues.  I will touch on some of those issues that I discovered in an article online from Market Watch.  First, apple customers are worn out.  The excitement over the first iPhone or iPad has introduced “upgrade fatigue” where customers are upset about the overwhelming influx of newer models.  According to this article, when people buy Apple’s latest product, the company is usually already preparing its replacement, said technology consultant Patchen Barrs, who has owned 25 Apple products over the past 20 years.  Patchen goes on to say: “Everything we buy from them is already out of date”  Since 2001, there have been six iPods, two iPod minis, six iPod Nanos, four iPod Shuffles and four editions of the iPod Touch.  Apple has released five iPhone models since 2007 and has had three iPads since 2010.  With these many new releases I feel as though customers will get tired of what “new” product or upgrade is available.  Second, these apps are misleading.  These games are available in the App Store and referred to as “freemium.”  They’re free to play, but only for a certain amount of time or before reaching a certain level, says Damon Brown, author of several books on tech culture.  Third, apple is getting in the way.  There are several theories about why people can’t put their iPhone down. “Apple’s products are addictive,” says Larry Rosen, author of “iDisorder: Understanding Our Obsession with Technology and Overcoming Its Hold on Us.” In fact, many users are aware of their attachment to their iPhones. Some 25% of people see their iPhone as “dangerously alluring” and 41% said losing their iPhone would be “a tragedy,” according to a 2010 Stanford University poll.  Fourth, customers spend more with apple devices.  The average iPhone owner, for example, spends over 10% more on their monthly bills than other pre-paid smartphone users—$90 versus $81—according to estimates by Morningstar analyst Michael Hodel.  Fifth, apple needs another “game changing” gadget.   It’s time for Apple to shake up the mobile market again, says Walt Piecyk, technology analyst with BTIG brokerage. He says a completely new Apple phone that costs less than the $649 starting retail price for the iPhone 4S would be a good start. Sixth, the iPhone is overpriced.  This is basically a continuation of the last point.  In short, they need to offer a more affordable mobile device.  The seventh point touches on how children wanting the products makes the adults want them and visa-verse. The eighth point talks about how apples features are falling behind, i.e. android offers bigger screens, etc.  The ninth and tenth points go hand in hand.  They touch on hooking the consumer for a life time customer and that apple assumes  the customer will stay loyal even if apple screws up a product.

  1. I agree with you that Apple products are way too overpriced. I own a few Apple products myself and love them all. However, I find myself holding off on buying Apple products because they are simply too pricey. Of course all of my products are dependable and Apple customer services are great. I also agree that Apple is falling behind on its competition. Their products seem the same to me (i.e. iPhone 4 versus 4s). The only big difference that really come into play was Siri. And now the iPhone 5 is out so the price for both of these products are down making people who paid a ton for their iPhone 4, especially the iPhone 4s, angry. It’s ridiculous. I hope Apple’s success will continue but they need to move away from all the upgrades and stuffs.

  2. This was an interesting article. I also agree with the above statement that apple products are overpriced. I also have numerous products from Apple and they are great. I have never had any major problems with Apple and the one time that I did, I called the company and they sent me a new product right away. I do feel that Apple’s products that they keep coming out with are very similar and there is no real change in what they are doing. I recently purchased the IPad 2 and my brother bought the IPad 3. We compared both products and there was not much difference, but the fact that he paid almost $300 more for his. I think Apple needs to step up their game and create something different and stop coming with the IPad 2, IPad 3 or even the Iphone 4 and Iphone 4s. I feel that other companies such as Samsung have really come a long way and are moving up quickly in their technology.

  3. Like everyone else I agree that Apple products are overpriced. Apple products are great and their sleek look and easy usage is a great plus. With that being said, these products have a high demand that does not make sense to me. All the Apple lovers talk about the innovation and new updates but like the article said most of the new products are outdated and the competitors already have it. Apple has great marketing team because they make the viewers seem as the product is something you cant live without and no one has it. I believe Apple lovers are loyal because of the innovation they had in the beginning but people are starting to realize that the changes and updates are not worth spending over continuously. Apple needs to step up the game and provide new innovation and not hold it for the next generation. Even though Apple has a great market now and they will for a while, but people are starting to realize the changes and will look at other markets if they don’t provide innovation that is worth paying top dollar for.

  4. I liked how you touched on a lot of good statistics, with your analysis of how consumers are getting tired of apples constant struggle to keep there products looking “fresh.” I personally dont have an iphone and my ipod is still the second gen., but I must admit from what I have heard and from what I can see apple is getting a little stale for many peoples taste. Over the years those long lines out the door for the new iphones have dwindled and many of the newer versions seem to be very similar despite the few extra apps installed. I believe one of the major problems with the point you make such as how they have come out with three new ipads since 2010, including the ridiculous new ipad mini, they must learn to ask the customers what they want. While believing they control the way the market thinks, they must allow customers to have there fair say.

  5. I agree with a lot of what the article says but I don’t think it is just Apple products. There are people glued to the cellphones, tablets, whatever today. Anytime you go on the train that’s what people are on it’s not apple it’s everything.

  6. I think the big problem with all the Apple upgrades is that they are unimpressive. Each model they come out with is just slightly better then the last. There is not a large improvement from one model to the next to make it worth it to the customer. I still have the iPhone 3 and have been waiting for one to come out that shows a significant improvement. Those who go out and buy the newest and latest Apple gadget can only blame themselves. You can not blame Apple for your obsessive need to have the newest and most innovative product on the market. Of course Apple is going to come out with model after model to make money. I say the consumers should have more self control.

  7. I believe that Apple has established they will be a frontrunner in the technological world for a long time coming. Apple products are rarely released with drastic improvements. The products they release are bought by a large number of consumer innovators who need to have the newest, best Apple product. The upgrades are nothing spectacular, in my personal opinion. The most recent upgrade for the iPhone was actually a back step from what I have been hearing. Many people complain about the new map function(s) and the software as a whole. In either case, Apple has a strong hold and will not be letting up anytime soon. They know they can play off of the consumer innovators and early adopters – these people will stay loyal to apple, and need the newest version of whatever Apple has to offer.
