iPhone- A Revolutionary Product

Apple’s iPhones are one of the most popular mobile devices currently being produced in the world. Apple made its entry into the cellular phone market in 2007, after having created the first iPhone. The master mind behind all of the amazing characteristics of this device was Steve Jobs, a man who become an iconic figure in the business world of today’s generation.

Apple partnered with AT&T in order to make the iPhone available to consumers. The whole idea of the iPhone was meant to represent the combination of an iPod and cell phone. A phone with internet access and numerous convenient cell phone apps that could appeal to all kinds of target markets. The idea of the iPhone was created to be based around a touch screen phone with a single button. This idea was something that was never before seen in the cellular phone world and when the iPhone finally hit the market it changed the way the market would function from then on.

In class we recently learned about a products life cycle. A product will usually go through a life cycle sequence of the following: an introduction stage, growth stage, maturity stage, and decline stage. The iPhone has been around now for five years and the life cycle of this product has been a very interesting one to follow. Apple has throughout these five years continued to introduce new versions of the iPhone each year and with each version came new changes. The latest version that Apple is releasing is the iPhone 5. Production on this version has begun this June and the phone should be released in the fall. The only main change of the iPhone 5 is the 4-inch display screen.

Apple is now only making minor changes with each new version and increasing the stability of the production process. Due to these factors I believe the iPhone is now moving into to the maturity stage of the product life cycle. Apple’s primary concern should now be to maintain its revenue and not to implement major changes to the device. The iPhone seems to be moving into the maturity stage thanks to all of the other competitors who are releasing other Smartphone products and making it more difficult for Apple to increase revenue.

While the iPhone has seen its peak, its entire life cycle has been one that has revolutionized the mobile phone market. It has created a pathway into what future technology will look like and I am interested to see how the idea of the iPhone will spark other ideas to evolve in years to come.

So I leave you with the questions of how do you believe the iPhone will affect future technology and is its decline stage in the near future?

  1. Interesting Post. There is no doubt that Apple’s products are innovated, and the company will continue to be a benchmark for other companies to play catch up. I think the question of life cycle of the iPhone is difficult to assess. The iPhone’s life cycle stage can vary depends on how we look at it; from the perspective of the iPhone itself or the smartphone industry. Also, if Apple would once again revolutionize the smartphone industry by launching the next “iPhone 10” (for example), would the iPhone life cycle stage revert back to an introduction stage? I think this post definitely raises some interesting questions regarding how we look at product life cycle.

  2. Steve Jobs brought a revolution in Technology and Mobile Industry. It was because of Jobs’ imagination that today, we have products like iphones, ipads and etc. I completely agree with the fact that, Iphone has reached to its maturity rate. Today, where samsung is coming out with products like samsung note which is a combination of tablet and a phone. It is very important for apple to re-invent their phones again.

To the question asked above,I believe you are right, if apple once revolutionize their product, It will probably fall under the introduction stage again, because of the fact that it is not the same old iphones. However, Apple needs to come out with a whole new features in their phones, so that it can be considered as a new product again. For example, other android phones. Though many of the phones have same android platform, they have different models and different specifications which helps them stay in the introduction stage.

  3. The product life cycle of the iPhone is very interesting and I am glad that you wrote your article focusing on it. Even though the original post is from 2012, the same exact post could have been posted today, in 2014(with slight changes of the iPhone models). Android is one of, if not the only, iPhone’s biggest competitors. Android phones have been attempting and succeeding with standing out compared to the iPhone. As mentioned earlier, the Galaxy Note along with other phone models like the HTC One, Galaxy S5, and LG G3 have given consumers a comparable alternative the the iPhone. With each new iPhone there are only minor tweaks in design and minor software updates that often work on earlier models as well. The newly introduced iPhone 6 is, in my opinion, the biggest change to date. The enormous plus size screen rivals that of a small tablet but is also oddly similar to the Galaxy Note. Regardless, it is still tough to say if each new model sparks the beginning of a new life cycle, or if the iPhone series as a whole is a single life cycle.

  4. I totally agree with you. I feel that Apple has moved in to the maturity stage. It should now focus on increasing its revenue and introduce something new to the market otherwise many other competitors will take its place in the market. Apple has been holding on to its on phone although it has diversified in to the new market but it has the same software and sometimes does not allow third party apps to work on to its phone. It should change its market vision and try to add more changes to the phone to capture more market share.

  5. I think that Apple is an ever evolving company that is researching and designing technological innovations that we haven’t even thought of. I personally do not own any Apple products but I do know that every time the general population thinks that they are done they come out with something bigger and better. This is getting harder to do with the Android market catching up to and sometimes even surpassing them, but I think they still have more products to reveal up their sleeve. In terms of products I don’t think they are completely out of their growth stage just yet.

  6. Apple has been able to be at the forefront with its products, and for many years has lead the pack in terms of bringing something new to the table. With the introduction of the i Phone 6 we see a huge interest from consumers, and we see that many of Apple’s very loyal customers have kept loyal to the company. What is interesting is how much Apple has replicated much of its past success by in many ways duplicating what The Samsung Galaxy Note introduced much prior to the i phone’s release. It’s questionable if Apple is ahead of the pack any longer and I think more sooner than later we will see more Apple enthusiasts eventually switch teams. I believe it will eventually become more apparent to consumers that their are some very good alternatives to the i phone.
